FIND A RECORD FIRST

Use an exact food and preparation.

This static tool does not contain or sync the USDA database. Search FoodData Central, open the specific record, and copy its values and identifier—or use the food’s own Nutrition Facts label.

Values per basis

Nothing is uploaded or saved. Recheck units: values per serving are not interchangeable with values per 100 g.

CHOOSING DATA

The record is part of the result.

Two foods with similar names can differ by brand, preparation, water content, fortification, and serving basis. Select deliberately instead of accepting the first search result.

For a USDA record

Match the description and preparation state, record the FDC ID, retain the public record URL, and copy nutrients from one common basis. FoodData Central includes multiple data types; “Foundation,” “SR Legacy,” “Survey,” and “Branded” do not mean the same collection method or update pattern.

For a Nutrition Facts label

Use the labeled serving basis and identify the product precisely. A UPC or other package identifier is useful. A physical label may have no public URL, so the meal table says so rather than inventing one.

For recipes and restaurant meals

A credible recipe calculation needs ingredient records, ingredient weights, final cooked yield, and serving weight. Use the recipe calorie calculator when those measurements are available. Neither tool estimates nutrient retention, restaurant portions, or an unverified mixed dish from its name.

Indian-food scope: No Indian-food database or generic values were added. A localized calculator should wait for verified IFCT access and reuse terms, preparation-specific recipes, cooked yields, and sourced household portion weights.

HOW THE MATH WORKS

One scale factor per item

scale factor = serving grams × quantity ÷ basis gramsitem nutrient = nutrient per basis × scale factor

Example: if a verified record states 250 kcal per 100 g and the meal uses 60 g, the item contributes 250 × 60 ÷ 100 = 150 kcal. Meal totals are sums of the scaled items. No nutrient value is inferred from the food name.

FoodData Central’s role

USDA states that FoodData Central data are public domain and offers API and downloadable data. This page currently provides manual lookup and provenance—not a complete embedded or live-synced database.
